High School Memoral Scholarship Fund In Memory of Robert Zachary Spears (Zach). This scholarship will awarded to a graduate of Zachary's class of 2019. The scholarship fund will be transferred into an official bank account soon, but for now will be received through this account. If you would rather donate in person that is perfectly ok.Details and requirements will be decided at a later date. Thank you all so much for sharing your love of Zach.
As many of you know, we lost our son, Zachary Spears in November of 2016 in a motor vehicle accident and to this day we are faced with the heartbreak of this tragedy.
Many of you were able to experience the light that he brought into every room and the kind smile that was always present. He had a way of treating everyone like an old friend and making the room feel welcome. He was a go-getter and a dream chaser. He was the hard worker and the class clown. He brought so much happiness to us all throughout his 16 short years of life.
On that fateful night in November, Zachary made the choice to drink and drive. While no one should condone this behavior, his death was preventable. Before getting behind the wheel, Zachary purchased two cases of beer from the Hop-In in Dothan and did not get carded. This same gas station has a reputation of selling alcohol to minors and overcharging them to make a quick buck, even to this day.
Our son’s death forces us to carry a daily aggravation due to the fact that there is little to no penalty for the sale of alcohol to minors. In fact, the man who sold Zachary the alcohol is still employed at the same gas station. Neither this man, or the gas station, have faced any consequences for their actions on that night or any other.
We cannot bring our son back and that is something that will haunt us for the rest of our days, but we are taking this dark time and making it light. We are using our despair as an opportunity to shed light on the problems we are facing in our community and give others the chance to improve it.
You’ve helped us raise the funds to provide five separate scholarships of $1000 each to a few of Zachary’s classmates. We are hoping this scholarship will bring change and raise awareness in our community and for future generations. An application will be provided to anyone who wishes to apply.
